These streams include gift cards and merchandise.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Online Ordering<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to Brizo data, 382,307, or 57% of restaurants in North America with verified websites offered online ordering. A small percentage \u2014 9% \u2014 lack online ordering capabilities, but that number may soon shrink even further. Kurtz says, \u201cOwners recognize that online ordering is a lifeline.\u201d Bill Fow, Director of Web Development, at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/aspiredigitalsolutions.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Aspire Digital Solutions<\/a>, a digital marketing and web design agency located in Ridgefield, Connecticut, concurs. \u201cThere was a tremendous influx of restaurants with a need for online ordering \u2014 even from those who had been resistant to it,\u201d Fow says.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-647 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/brizodata.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Untitled-1.jpeg\" alt=\"Brizo Foodmetrics chart from dashboard\" width=\"831\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/brizodata.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Untitled-1.jpeg 831w, https:\/\/brizodata.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Untitled-1-300x95.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/brizodata.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Untitled-1-768x244.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 831px) 100vw, 831px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Image:<\/strong> Restaurants in North America with verified websites and use online ordering systems.<\/em><em><br \/>\n<\/em><em><strong>Additional data point:<\/strong> In total, 57% of restaurants in North America have verified websites and are also using online ordering systems.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Emphasis on Imagery<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Kurtz says, \u201cThe adage that \u2018people eat with their eyes\u2019 is especially true in this digital-first world and that universal agreement has increased over the last few years.\u201d Carla Siegel, the founder of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/agentsie.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Agentsie Hospitality Design<\/a>, a New York City-based firm that provides a wide range of design and communications services for the industry, agrees. \u201cPeople\u2019s first impressions happen so quickly, so it\u2019s really important to have professional photography,\u201d Siegel says. \u201cIt\u2019s difficult to make a stunning website that people want to stay on without great photographs,\u201d states Fow. His team even employs\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/farmhousekatonah.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">360-photography<\/a>\u00a0to allow diners to experience the space. \u201dPeople can click and drag on them for an interactive experience,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bold Colors \u2014 or One Color<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom a design perspective, we are seeing bold and vibrant colors, unique textures and backgrounds, and creative fonts and typography,\u201d says Kurtz. \u201cPeople are leaning into very rich tones \u2014 lots of dark greens and deep reds,\u201d Siegel states. Conversely, says Kurtz, \u201cWe\u2019re also seeing restaurants lean into clean, simple, and minimalistic websites with an easy to navigate UX that captures the guests\u2019 attention and keeps them engaged on the website for longer periods of time. (You can read more about it\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessibility.works\/blog\/2021-ada-wcag-website-accessibility-standards-requirements\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.) Designers are now being tasked by mindful clients with making sure websites are ADA-compliant. Siegel says, \u201cThere\u2019s this whole movement happening to make sure that people with low vision or no vision are not being excluded from the web experience.\u201d Fow notes, \u201cI think some of the reasons we\u2019re seeing people employ these big color contrasts is for ADA-compliance purposes. It\u2019s very important to make sure that everything is legible and readable, especially if you have people who are color blind or using a screen reader.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Speed and Mobile Optimization<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlmost 60% of customers visit a restaurant website from their mobile devices. It\u2019s extremely important that a restaurant\u2019s website is responsive to different devices and loads quickly regardless of connectivity. A poor mobile experience leads to lost customers and ultimately less revenue,\u201d Kurtz says. Fow reveals, \u201cGoogle famously came out with a recent update that puts website speed as a larger factor in search engine rankings, so whenever we build or spruce up a website, we have to keep page speed in mind.\u201d Siegel agrees that site builders must be mindful of slow connections. \u201cThere are ways to tailor a site to accommodate all levels of connectivity, so someone with a slow connection can access a more streamlined version of a site,\u201d she says. Kurtz notes, \u201cAll BentoBox websites are 100% responsive and mobile-optimized to boost SEO and create a better user experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ditching PDFs (except when it comes to wine)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To get better SEO results and have a better online ordering experience, restaurants are turning away from the widely used PDF format for their menus. \u201cIt\u2019s well known that it\u2019s annoying to have to click on a PDF, wait for it to load, and then scroll through it on your phone. Also, there\u2019s no SEO value there,\u201d says Foy. Kurtz agrees, saying, \u201cPDF menus are slow to load, particularly on mobile devices, and are challenging to update. Google cannot scan PDFs to understand what menu items a restaurant offers. This means that when a diner searches online for a restaurant name and menu item, they don\u2019t see a search result.\u201d She also advises BentoBox clients that PDF menus are a website accessibility issue that could result in an ADA lawsuit. \u201cA best practice is to have a text-based menu with the ability to download a PDF version. Restaurants are leveraging QR codes to offer digital menus that can be updated in real-time and offering paperless payments so that diners can pay from their own devices. We are also seeing more restaurants add a \u2018careers\u2019 page to their website to support their staffing needs.\u201d Fow has seen an uptick in the demand for QR codes as well. \u201cIt\u2019s been huge! All of our clients have asked for them \u2014 and that\u2019s another reason not to use PDFs because it\u2019s got to stay up-to-date at all times,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>86\u2019ing Reservations Widgets<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Seeking, perhaps, to save money and better control the guest experience, some operators are opting out of online reservations widgets from third-party providers.
